Fedora Scientific: a KDE desktop for scientific work

Fedora Scientific is a Fedora Lab combining computation, programming and scientific-writing tools with KDE. It can provide a starting point for study, data analysis or research. Its suitability depends on the applications and versions your work requires.

The official Fedora Scientific overview describes the selection. Our Fedora profile introduces its underlying distribution.

Which tools are included?

The project highlights the following software:

  • Data analysis: Python, IPython, Pandas and R.
  • Numerical and symbolic computation: SciPy, GNU Octave and Maxima.
  • Plotting: Matplotlib and Gnuplot.
  • Scientific writing: LaTeX tools, including Kile.

This collection does not guarantee that your entire environment is configured. Check installed versions, additional libraries and your team’s extensions in the chosen image. Laboratory software, instrument drivers and proprietary applications may require separate installation or may not support that Fedora release.

For a data-analysis course, for example, try a small dataset and the required Python imports. For a thesis, compile a copy of your LaTeX document with its bibliography and fonts. For an existing project, run its own tests before replacing your workstation.

Separate the system, dependencies and data

A collection of applications does not by itself make an experiment reproducible. Record the operating-system, tool and library versions, calculation parameters and data origins. Keep scripts and instructions with the project, then verify that another person can recreate the environment.

Python’s venv creates a project-specific package environment isolated by default from base Python packages. The official Python documentation recommends being able to recreate that environment rather than moving it unchanged. Keep your code, data and dependency-installation information separately.

This separation supports work on multiple projects, but guarantees neither identical results on every machine nor compatibility with every library. For long calculations, also check memory, storage and any GPU requirements. The name “Scientific” alone says nothing about performance gains.

Before a deadline, test updates on a project copy and retain an independent backup. Account for Fedora’s release lifecycle: an old downloaded image does not become a long-term maintenance solution.

Fedora Scientific is not Scientific Linux

The names refer to separate projects. Scientific Linux belongs to the Enterprise Linux family, and its official website announces an end-of-life date of 30 June 2024. That date does not apply to Fedora Scientific.

Do not automatically apply an old Scientific Linux tutorial to Fedora Scientific. Check the full system name and release when choosing instructions. Our Fedora and Red Hat family category helps distinguish the projects.

Downloading Fedora Scientific and preparing a trial

On 11 October 2026, the official website offered Fedora Scientific 44 with x86_64 and aarch64 live images. Select the correct architecture and follow Fedora’s signature and checksum-verification instructions.

  1. Find the right download: use the official website above or our Fedora Scientific download page. Distinguish a published stable release from any beta image.
  2. Try representative work: boot compatible live media, explore KDE and open copies of your files. Use our pre-installation checklist for peripherals. A live trial does not measure the performance of an installed system.
  3. Prepare installation: back up the target disk and USB drive before writing to them. Allow space for datasets as well as the operating system.

If your main interest is a different system and update-management model, see our Fedora Silverblue profile. Scientific primarily addresses the need for a selected scientific application collection.
