Clear Linux is a discontinued Intel-developed Linux distribution. Intel states in the official archived repository that it no longer maintains, develops or supports the project, including updates. The repository was archived in August 2025. This profile explains the system’s historical design; it is not a recommendation for a new maintained installation.
Main features
During its active development, Clear Linux was distinguished by:
- optimisation work for Intel processor platforms;
- a modular approach to software bundles;
- a stateless configuration model intended to simplify maintenance;
- an integrated update mechanism;
- development tools and libraries.
Performance and optimisation
Intel’s developers focused on compiler settings, libraries and platform capabilities to improve selected workloads. These design goals do not prove superiority over every other distribution or on every Intel computer. No benchmark performed by distrib.wiki is presented here.
Modular software organisation
Clear Linux grouped software into bundles that could be added or removed. This provided a distribution-specific way to organise application and system components. Archived bundles should not be treated as a source of maintained software.
Stateless configuration
The system separated operating-system defaults, administrator configuration and user data. This design aimed to make updates and recovery easier to manage. It did not replace independent backups or guarantee that configuration and application data could never be affected by a change.
Development environment
The project supplied tools and libraries for application development, including languages such as Python, C, C++ and Java. These historical capabilities remain relevant to studying its design, but a working development environment now requires supported tools and a maintained operating-system base.
Overall assessment
Clear Linux remains an interesting historical example of performance-oriented distribution engineering, software bundles and stateless configuration. Because Intel has ended maintenance and updates, choose a maintained alternative for new everyday or production installations. Any exploration of archived images should account for their unsupported status.
