Arch Linux: building your system and planning maintenance

Arch Linux is an independent distribution for x86-64 computers. It supplies a minimal base to extend, with rolling updates. Choosing your components is its main attraction; that choice also means taking responsibility for their configuration and maintenance.

The official Arch introduction describes this approach: install the software you want, configure the system and follow its development. Add a desktop, applications and services according to your requirements. A small starting base alone does not predict the memory use or performance of the finished system.

Does Arch suit your use?

Consider how much work you want to do yourself. If choosing a desktop, understanding errors and reading documentation are part of the goal, this approach deserves a trial. If you mainly want to open applications after guided setup, compare Linux Mint and Ubuntu too.

List three essential tasks, such as video calls, a game or a professional application. Identify the software, installation method and peripherals each needs. Our software selection guide helps build the list. The distribution name cannot replace these checks.

Rolling release: a continuously changing system

Arch updates through its packages, normally without reinstalling for every ISO. An ISO is an initial installation image; its date is not a version target for an existing system. The official download page distinguishes these situations.

Maintenance is part of using Arch. Read project announcements before updating; some specify manual intervention for affected software. Choose a time when you can read instructions and handle a problem, rather than immediately before an important deadline. Keep an independent document backup.

The pacman manual describes a full update: -y refreshes repository databases and -u upgrades installed packages. The usual command is pacman -Syu, with appropriate privileges. Read its output and any instructions in project announcements.

Official packages and the AUR have different origins

Pacman installs packages from configured repositories and manages dependencies. The AUR is a community collection of build recipes, not simply another official repository of ready-made packages.

The PKGBUILD manual explains recipes used by makepkg to build packages subsequently installed through pacman. A recipe can specify downloads and installation scripts. Inspect these files and their origins before building. Popularity is not a security guarantee; seek help before running a step you do not understand.

Manual installation or archinstall

The archinstall project offers guided installation from the Arch environment. Its interface helps enter choices but cannot decide which disk may be erased, which accounts to create or which desktop you need. Its guided installation documentation requires preparation of networking before starting.

A virtual machine lets you learn the procedure with a virtual disk. It does not validate Wi-Fi, suspend or graphics drivers on your real computer. On physical hardware, back up data and identify partitions to retain before any formatting.

Before you start

  1. Choose the project: Arch and its derivatives have their own tools and instructions. Our Arch family category helps compare them.
  2. Prepare your tasks: list applications, hardware to check and a fallback for essential work.
  3. Prepare installation: consult the Arch download and verification guide, then documentation for your chosen method.
  4. Plan ongoing work: backups, announcements and maintenance time belong in your decision.
