Choose your OpenBSD download

The button above opens the official OpenBSD image selection. Choose your architecture, then suitable media: USB or an optical drive, including a virtual one. The OpenBSD project provides the file.

OpenBSD 8.0 was released on 20 October 2026. For everyday installation, choose a published release; snapshots track development. Consult platform notes: amd64 means compatible x86-64 processors, including Intel models, and does not suit an ARM machine.

USB image or ISO: which should you choose?

  • install80.img: a USB image including the system’s file sets.
  • install80.iso: an image for CD/DVD or a virtual optical drive, including those files.
  • miniroot80.img or cd80.iso: smaller media; file sets must be obtained over the network or from local media.

Available formats vary by architecture. Find the corresponding links in the official image selection.

Verify the image before using it

Download checksums and the signed SHA256.sig file from the same directory as your image. A SHA256 check detects corruption; the signature also authenticates the data when verified with the correct public key.

The signify manual describes verification. For OpenBSD 8.0, use the base key specified on the release page. If verification fails, do not use the image until you identify the cause.

Prepare installation or upgrade

Writing the image erases the selected media. Back up its contents and check the destination. Follow the media creation instructions: simply copying the file into a USB folder is not enough.

If OpenBSD is already installed, read the 7.9 to 8.0 upgrade guide before starting. Supported upgrades follow consecutive releases, so an older installation may require several stages. Preserve your data and configuration, then complete the required post-upgrade operations.

To prepare applications and hardware, read the OpenBSD profile. Our OpenBSD 8.0 news article explains this release’s changes.
