How to download Parrot OS for free
Parrot OS is a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at cybersecurity, privacy, development and digital forensics. Its editions serve security professionals, students, researchers and developers who need a collection of relevant tools. Installing a security-oriented distribution does not by itself make every workflow secure.
Get images from the official Parrot project website and verify them. The original download description referred to ParrotOS 7.2; check the official page for the release actually available now. Formats described include Security, Home, Hack The Box, Raspberry Pi, Docker, WSL, cloud and virtual-machine images.
Choose an edition for your intended work. Security includes a large specialist toolkit, while Home provides a smaller desktop-oriented starting point. Other formats are designed for virtualisation, containers, training or specific hardware.
Which Parrot OS edition should you download?
Security Edition is intended for penetration testing, digital forensics, reverse engineering, network auditing, security research and training labs. It is relevant when you need the supplied specialist tools rather than simply a general-purpose desktop.
Home Edition retains the project's privacy and development orientation without installing the entire Security toolkit. It is a more focused starting point for browsing, office work, programming and personal use.
Hack The Box Edition is aimed at Hack The Box users and capture-the-flag exercises. It provides an environment for authorised cybersecurity challenges and training labs.
For a virtual machine, check which prebuilt formats are offered for your platform: OVA for VirtualBox, VMDK for VMware, QCOW2 for QEMU/KVM or UTM images for Apple Silicon may be available. Check the architecture as well as the virtualisation software before importing.
Docker, WSL, cloud and Raspberry Pi formats address more specific environments. They can be useful for labs, courses, automated testing and deployments where a conventional desktop ISO is not the appropriate format.
Prepare your computer before downloading
Define the intended use first. A virtual machine is often a convenient starting point for learning cybersecurity, because you can build a separate lab without reinstalling your main operating system. Configure its networking and shared folders deliberately; virtualisation is not an absolute isolation guarantee.
For installation on a physical computer, back up important files beforehand. Installing an operating system can change or erase disk partitions. Testing from a live USB does not remove that risk when you later install.
Check the resources available. Security includes more tools and requires more storage than a smaller desktop image. Home may be more appropriate for a modest machine when the specialist toolkit is unnecessary.
Create a bootable Parrot OS USB drive
Write the downloaded ISO to a USB drive using a compatible image writer, such as Rufus on Windows or balenaEtcher on Windows, macOS or Linux. Advanced users can use dd on Linux. Verify the target device because this operation erases it.
Restart the computer, open its boot menu and select the USB drive. Depending on the manufacturer, the boot-menu key might be F12, F9, F8, Esc or Delete; use the machine's documentation to confirm it.
Before installing, use the live session to check Wi-Fi, sound, graphics, keyboard and mouse, and to assess responsiveness. A live session lets you explore the system without installing it, provided you do not deliberately modify the internal disk.
Install Parrot OS after downloading
The graphical installer covers language, keyboard, time zone, target disk, partitions and user credentials. If you are unfamiliar with the process, first practise in a virtual machine before installing on a physical disk.
Select the target disk carefully. An option that uses the entire disk may delete the existing system and its data. Keeping Windows or another OS requires a properly prepared dual-boot arrangement.
After installation, apply updates using the project's package-management guidance. Parrot's Debian base makes APT-related tools familiar to Debian users, but follow Parrot's own update instructions. Updates are an essential part of maintenance, not a guarantee against every vulnerability.
Why consider Parrot OS?
Parrot offers an environment for cybersecurity, privacy and development. Security provides a broad specialist toolkit, whereas Home lets users begin with fewer preinstalled security applications.
Virtual-machine images make it convenient to prepare training environments and repeatable labs. Keep lab networking and access to your host computer appropriately restricted while experimenting.
The distribution also includes tools relevant to privacy, encryption, data protection and digital defence. Their effectiveness depends on correct configuration and on the risks of the particular activity.
Use cybersecurity tools only on your own systems, in authorised labs and training platforms, or in environments where you have explicit permission. Obtain clear authorisation before testing third-party infrastructure.
From download to installation
Choose Security when you need its assessment toolkit, Home for a smaller everyday desktop, or a specialist training edition when it matches your course or lab. Select a supported release and the correct architecture.
From the official download page, obtain and verify the appropriate image, then create USB media, import a virtual machine or use the platform-specific format. Read the installation guidance and keep your use of security tools within the scope of your authorisation.
