ReactOS: an independent system, still in alpha

ReactOS is a free operating system that aims for compatibility with Windows applications and drivers. It is not a Linux distribution. Its architecture follows Windows NT principles. The official project describes a complete system with its own kernel.

For experimentation. ReactOS remains alpha software: malfunctions and data corruption are possible. The project recommends a virtual machine or a computer without important data. The compatibility goal does not guarantee that every application, driver or peripheral will work.

Which release is offered?

As of 3 October 2026, the official download page offers ReactOS 0.4.16, released on 29 August 2026. It retains alpha status and should not be presented as a stable release for a main workstation.

The official ReactOS 0.4.16 announcement describes a graphical installer and an image combining trial and installation functions. The older choice between separate LiveCD and BootCD images therefore no longer describes the main download covered here.

When might it interest you?

  • Exploring the project: examine its interface and follow progress towards a free system compatible with the Windows ecosystem.
  • Investigating specific compatibility: record exact software, operating-system and environment versions. A result on one configuration does not establish compatibility everywhere.

Preparing a first trial

Use a dedicated environment without personal documents you need to retain. Set a simple objective: exploring the interface, examining an application or learning installation. Record results and errors alongside the version used.
