Zorin OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution with editions for different needs. Its interface can help you find your bearings, but the decision mainly depends on your applications, files and hardware.

Updated on . Information checked against the official sources linked below.

Which Zorin OS edition should you choose?

  • Core: free edition with common applications and standard desktop layouts; a starting point for a personal computer.
  • Pro: paid edition with additional layouts, applications and installation support. Purchasing it is not required to use Core.
  • Education: free edition for schools and students, with a selection of educational software.

The official edition comparison lets you check what is included before downloading or buying.

Lite uses Xfce. Zorin OS 18.1 Lite is available, and the Lite branch is supported at least until June 2029. The project plans to stop providing an official Lite edition beginning with Zorin OS 19; this is an announced future change, not an immediate end to Lite. Read the Lite information page before choosing it for a machine you intend to keep for years.

Installing applications and checking Windows software

Zorin OS 18 is based on Ubuntu 24.04. The Software application provides access to Zorin and Ubuntu repositories, Flathub and the Snap Store. For third-party packages, check compatibility with this base and the supplier’s identity; do not add a repository simply because an old tutorial recommends it. The application-installation documentation explains formats and sources.

Windows App Support uses Wine to run some Windows programs. The project states that not all work fully. First look for a Linux version or suitable alternative, then check the features you actually need. A familiar interface does not guarantee that a work application or its extensions will run. Read the official Windows App Support limitations.

An older PC still needs a compatible processor

Published requirements specify a dual-core 1 GHz Intel or AMD 64-bit processor, 2 GB RAM and an 800 × 600 display. Minimum storage varies: 15 GB for Core, 35 GB for Education and 45 GB for Pro. These are installation thresholds; allow extra space for documents and applications. The offered images are not native installations for Apple Silicon Macs or ARM-based Surface devices. Check the official requirements and exceptions.

Release information and updates

At the 27 October 2026 check, official downloads offered Zorin OS 18.1, released on 15 April 2026, with software and security updates announced until June 2029. Existing Zorin OS 18 installations can receive 18.1 changes through the updater without reinstalling; see the release announcement.

A major-version upgrade requires different preparation. Back up files, update the existing system and examine the options in Upgrade Zorin OS. Third-party repositories or system modifications can complicate migration. Follow the official upgrade guide for your situation.

Prepare a trial that supports a decision

List a real task for each essential application: opening a document, joining a video call, printing or playing a media file. During a USB trial, check Wi-Fi, sound, keyboard, display and suspend. Record limitations in the task-based trial worksheet.

Then visit Download Zorin OS to select an official image, verify it and prepare a USB drive. For comparison, see our Ubuntu profile.
