Download the right Fedora Silverblue image

Silverblue uses an OSTree installation image. Prepare to install on a chosen disk or in a virtual machine; do not expect the same live-desktop trial as Fedora Workstation. Read the Fedora Silverblue profile to understand this atomic GNOME desktop before downloading.

Choose the version and architecture

On 14 October 2026, the official Silverblue download page offered Fedora Silverblue 44, with OSTree ISOs for x86_64 (Intel and AMD) and aarch64 (ARM). Check your processor family and device support: “64-bit” alone is not enough, and an ARM image is not automatically suitable for every ARM machine.

Choose the stable release offered when you visit. Beta images are for testing an upcoming version. The official Silverblue introduction specifies approximately thirteen months of updates per release: plan version upgrades as well as routine updates.

Verify the ISO before use

Open “Verify” on your selected download’s page. Its instructions match that image and architecture. The Fedora security procedure distinguishes two complementary checks:

  1. Obtain the CHECKSUM file matching your ISO exactly and the specified Fedora OpenPGP certificates. Compare the certificate fingerprints with those published by Fedora.
  2. Verify the checksum file’s signature with the indicated tool, then check your ISO’s SHA256 against this authenticated reference.

A SHA256 comparison alone can detect corruption but does not replace signature verification. If verification fails or the image differs, stop preparing the media and obtain the matching official files. Do not copy a fingerprint for another version.

Create an installation USB drive

Fedora Media Writer writes images to USB media. Select the desired Silverblue image and check the destination device before writing. Use a drive large enough for the image and first back up its files: this operation replaces its contents. Simply copying the ISO into a USB folder does not create equivalent boot media.

Then reboot from the drive using your computer manufacturer’s procedure. If it does not boot, recheck architecture, the ISO and media preparation before changing boot settings.

Try Silverblue before replacing your system

The OSTree ISO installs Silverblue; the official live-media request explains how it differs from a desktop usable directly from USB. To explore Silverblue without repartitioning your computer, install it in a virtual machine with a dedicated virtual disk. This does not validate drivers and peripherals on your physical machine.

Before a physical installation, keep an independent backup and check the selected disk, partitions to preserve and essential applications. For dual boot or custom partitioning, consult installation documentation linked from Fedora’s website before confirming changes.

After installation, the rpm-ostree handbook describes deployments and returning to a previous deployment. System rollback does not replace document backups. Find guidance on Flatpak, Toolbx and system packages in the profile’s applications section, or compare uses with Fedora Workstation and other editions.
