Check the project status before using archived installation media.

Clear Linux is discontinued. Intel’s official project repository, archived on 7 August 2025, states that development, maintenance, support and updates have ended. The instructions below are historical background, not a recommendation for a new everyday installation.

Clear Linux was developed by Intel with a focus on performance, security engineering and modularity. Its former download and installation process is outlined here for understanding an existing installation or a controlled archival experiment.

Historical Clear Linux downloads

The former project website offered installation images for different uses. An archived image is not a currently maintained release. Use the official repository to understand project status, establish the origin of any retained image and read the documentation belonging to that exact version.

Preparing historical USB media

If examining an archived image in a disposable test environment, media preparation follows the instructions for that image:

  • Choose a USB drive large enough for the actual image; the older outline mentioned 4 GB, which should not be treated as a universal requirement.
  • Use an image-writing tool supported by the image, such as Rufus or balenaEtcher where applicable. Back up USB contents and verify the destination before writing.
  • Wait for writing and verification to finish before using the media.

Boot selection

To start from USB, use your computer’s documented boot menu:

  • Restart and use the manufacturer’s specified key. Examples include F2, F10, F12, Delete or Escape, depending on the machine.
  • Select the USB device; use a one-time boot choice where available.
  • If firmware changes are necessary, understand and record them before saving.

Historical installation sequence

Only use dedicated test storage after backing up important files. The older installation outline involved:

  • Booting with USB media inserted.
  • Starting the installer using the option available in that image.
  • Choosing language, time zone and keyboard settings.
  • Selecting the installation disk or partition. Formatting replaces existing data on the selected target.
  • Creating the required account credentials.
  • Reviewing settings and starting installation.
  • Waiting for completion, whose duration depends on hardware and media.
  • Restarting with USB removed.

First boot of an archived installation

The installed environment depends on the selected image and software:

  • Sign in with the credentials configured during installation.
  • If a desktop was included, explore its interface and applications within the test environment.
  • Do not assume that historical update services or software repositories are still available or maintained.

Plan a supported replacement

For a machine still using Clear Linux, preserve documents and configuration and plan a migration to a maintained system. A successful boot or an available archived ISO does not restore security updates. Our Linux catalogue and distribution choice guide help compare alternatives against your applications and hardware.
